We are pleased to announce the 2020 recipient of the Mr. & Mrs. Hsiang Pai & Wen-Hua Chu Department Of Astronomy Excellence In Research Grad Student Award Jennifer Li!
The Chu Excellence in Research Graduate Student Award was founded in 2015 by our own Prof. You-Hua Chu and is named in honor of her parents, who instilled in her a love of learning and research. It recognizes outstanding research by an Astronomy graduate student.
Jennifer is a Ph.D. candidate working with Prof. Yue Shen. She has used a wide array of imaging, spectroscopic and time-domain data from ground- and space-based facilities to study the evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. She has made original contributions to these fields of research with several first-author papers, and she is generous to help others with her scientific expertise. Besides her scientific achievements, Jennifer has played major roles in the Department’s outreach programs, including the successful annual astronomy summer camp for high school students since 2017. Before arriving at UIUC, she received her BSc in Atmospheric Science at National Taiwan University and began working on astronomy research at Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
